Chashme Baddoor

Being a 80s born child, I am not claiming that I have been crazy about this film. Neither, the labels like ‘cult’ or ‘classic’ were on my mind, at that time. But, yes, I remember it seeing quite a few times on television, in my teens & it did always give a pleasure.

If there is any synonyms to simplicity, it could be Farooque Shaikh & Deepti Naval, for sure, and the credit of making simple look beautiful in ‘Chashme Baddoor’, must go to Sai Paranjape. Many scenes, including the highlighted ‘Chamko’ one still proves it.

This simplicity of characters continued with not so typical friends, Omi & Jai played by Rakesh Bedi, Ravi Vasvani, who enviously tries to split Sidhharth & Neha. They were more than sidekicks & added humorous flavours to the film, along with Saeed Jaffery’s iconic Paan Shop Owner Lallan Miyan.

‘The Chashme Baddoor’ was a kind of film that belonged not to be recreated, but David Dhawan did. He might have garnered good amount of bucks, but certainly not the simplicity & innocence of the characters of the original.

It’s been 38 long years, since the film’s release & it is still as fresh as the morning breeze, you can inhale any time. But the only problem is, they don’t make films like Chashme Baddoor, anymore.
